Photo: (Canstruction/Kevin Wick)For Canstruction 2011, Angry Birds just got the aluminum treatment — and oh my, does that angry bird look artsy. The same can be said of Lady Gaga's gravity-defying platform pumps. (We think Alexander McQueen would approve.) The Brooklyn Bridge, a Converse kick, a fully functional QR code ... all canified. So where can you find over 100,000 tins reinterpreted as pop cultural scupltural sensations? Read on.
Now in its 19th year, the Canstruction exhibit is an annual NYC design contest that doubles as a massive food drive, conveniently scheduled right before Thanksgiving. In addition to the items reaped from submissions, exhibit guests (and fans from afar) will be bringing in non-perishables or donating to the Canstruction cause. All contributions will go to City Harvest, helping to feed the city this holiday season.Gaga's shoe silhouette was so popular this year that two versions made the expo floor: a sleek silver number by artist Arup and a colorful Goya-heavy piece by Khon Pederson Fox. Also of note are a Titanic replica (sinking, of course) and a freakishly realistic walk/don't-walk sign, all made of pork & beans, corn niblets, tomato soup and tuna fish. And SPAM. Never forget the SPAM.
If you happen to pass through New York between now and November 19, swing by the World Financial Center. Admission is free (the price is right), and your support will help fuel Canstruction — a campaign that's distributed 17.5 million pounds of food over the years. With well over 200,000 New Yorkers facing food insecurity this Thanksgiving, oggling Gaga's footwear is the least we can do.
